Exciting Annoucement - New Name & Logo as of February 2011

We are excited to announce that as of February 2011 we are changing our name to Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

Our name and logo will be different, but our commitment to finding a cure or control for cystic fibrosis is stronger than ever! By investing in high quality cystic fibrosis research and care programs, we have helped Canadian children and young adults live longer, healthier lives; but there is more work to be done.

The new symbol, which portrays an adult and child flying a kite, better reflects the people we help, the disease and our aspirations. Cystic fibrosis affects breathing and the kite communicates the movement of air.

Shiney Update from Sackville - Mount Allison University

Sackville is continuing to be the Busiest City in the Maritimes! We’ve had two very successful events in the past couple of weeks! First, on July 29th we held a Garden Party and Silent Auction at Cranewood, which is the President of the University’s home. We held a BBQ in the backyard where people played croquet and bocce ball. Inside we had a silent auction, deserts and some lovely music performed by Sara-Beth Harrison. The biggest item up for grabs was the quilted MTA/Shinerama pillow that created quite the bidding war! Not only was it a great night, we ended up raising almost $850.00 for Shinerama!

Last weekend we held our First Ever Shinerama Cake Walk. Because there aren’t too many people in Sackville during the year, let alone the summer, we weren’t sure how a cake walk would go over… It went great though! We had about 12 cakes donated, 30-40 people show up and we raised almost $250.00! Some people were really lucky - with some people winning 2 or 3 cakes!

All in all it was a great event and almost everyone went home happy!!

Right now we’re planning a Beer Pong Tournament, some publicity events and Shine Day!!! Good Luck to everyone in the next month!

University College (U of T) & Ryerson Engineering Host 1st Club Night Collaboration!

Hey Shine Nation!

On July 9th, University College at the University of Toronto and Ryerson Engineering hosted our first joint event of the summer! A packed club night in heart of downtown Toronto’s entertainment district! It was an extremely successful night, with partiers from both schools mixing and having an amazing time all in the name of a great cause.

Having raised $1,000, the Shinerama organizers from both schools are immensely proud of our first collaboration, and are looking forward to bringing together Toronto schools for even more successful events in the future!

Special thanks to London Tap House for hosting our event, and the assistance of their staff during the evening. Also, HUGE thanks to all of the University of Toronto and Ryerson students who came out to support this event.

Stay tuned for more Toronto Shining!

September 7th Declared Official Shine Day in Prince Edward Island!

Hello Shiner Nation!

UPEI is very proud to announce that September 7th, 2010 will be declared Shinerama Day by Prince Edward Island’s premier, the honourable Robert Ghiz. He will be attending our kick-off to sign the proclamation and speak to our Shiners before they head out (we’ll also be giving him a Shinerama t-shirt, but don’t tell! It’s a surprise).

The proclamation is an excellent opportunity for UPEI to promote our Shinerama campaign. It is a way to demonstrate solidarity between the university and the community as we work together to fight cystic fibrosis. It shows that our local politicians support Shinerama and the volunteer work of our Shiners. And with politicians around, there is always a great chance for a photo op to accompany those press releases! Getting might seem like a daunting task, but it is really quite simple. All it takes is the proper lines of communication and a little persistence. For our proclamation, we sent a letter to the premier’s office which included background information on Shinerama and UPEI’s involvement. We asked for the declaration and included an invitation for him to attend our kick-off. About a week later we sent a follow up email to see if he had received the letter yet, and included the main points of the letter in case he hadn’t. Within a couple of weeks we received an email from Premier Robert Ghiz’s personal secretary, telling us that the premier would be happy to declare Shinerama Day on PEI and attend our kick-off. Success!

Join the UPEI Shinerama Facebook group and follow @UPEIShinerama on Twitter to get all the updates on our 2010 Shinerama Campaign! We will be sure to let you all know our kick-off with Premier Robert Ghiz goes!

Shinerama Highlights

1961 Student leaders at Waterloo Lutheran University (now Sir Wilfrid Laurier University) looked for a way to have fun and help others during Orientation Week. A student suggests shining shoes in exchange for donations. Shinerama is born and raises $1,300 for a local school for the mentally challenged.

1964 Parents of children with cystic fibrosis in Waterloo (Ontario) tell the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CCFF) about Shinerama's success. They challenge the Foundation to make Shinerama a CF fundraiser at other schools. Eight universities and colleges rise to the challenge and raise more than $9,000.

1971 Canadian celebrities hear about Shinerama! Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau has his shoes shined. Superstar Bobby Orr's ice skates gleam!

1979 The 'International Year of the Child' holds special meaning for Shinerama students. They redouble their efforts to help thousands of Canadian children with cystic fibrosis.

1986 Mila Mulroney, the Foundation’s Honourary Director, receives the first, official 'shine' of the 1986 Shinerama campaign at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo (Ontario).

1988 Shinerama celebrates its 25th as a national CCFF fundraiser! Broadcaster Knowlton Nash lends his support to the campaign and recognizes the hard work of student volunteers since 1964.

1993 Shinerama students from the University of Western Ontario in London (Ontario) raise an unprecedented $117,000 for CF research! Shinerama raises $675,000 – its best campaign ever!

1994 TV station, MuchMusic, agrees to plug Shinerama and the cystic fibrosis cause during September.

1997 The first-ever Shiner draw takes place to thank students for participating in Shinerama. First prize is a flight for two to Europe donated by Royal Airlines! Sponsors Pizza Pizza and Kiwi Canada donate other great prizes.

1998 Rocket Richard gets his shoes shined at Nipissing University (Ontario). Singer Chantal Kreviazuk draws the winning Shinerific Draw ticket at the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton).

1999 Shinerama turns 35

2002 Shinerama breaks all fundraising records – raising more than $840,000. Zellers becomes an official supplier donating gift certificates to schools for car wash supplies. Media sponsor MuchMusic sends VJ Amanda Walsh to Ottawa Shinerama campaigns.

2003 Shinerama welcomes a record number of students and schools – raising almost $952,000. It breaks the record for the largest object shined – a Canadian warship. The honour for the highest amount raised by a single school goes to Wilfrid Laurier University – $177,000.

2004 Shinerama turns 40. It grabs national media attention – with over 5.6 million impressions in newspapers Canada-wide.

2005 After a hiatus of several years, Shinerama returns to Quebec with campaigns at McGill University and Bishop’s University. They help the campaign gross more than $920,640, its second highest total ever.

2006 Another record breaking year – $965,371

2007 Shinerama celebrates with a record-breaking year with more than $985,000 raised at 65 schools across Canada, an all time high on both counts! Also marked the first ever blue and orange RV on an across Canada summer tour to promote Shinerama and CF awareness. The students from the University of Western Ontario (aka Epic Pull) raised more than $50,000!

2008 Students from Canadore College and Nipissing University create the largest Shinerama banner, which hung under the local overpass for the month of September in North Bay. Several new schools joined Shinerama for the first time helping the 2008 campaign raise $953,000 for cystic fibrosis research and care.

2009 Shinerama turns 45!

UNB - Fredericton Canada Day Fundraiser Success!

Every year we kick off our campaign with a Canada Day fundraiser during the city’s Canada Day celebrations in the downtown area. We set up a vendor’s tent where we sell cotton candy, popcorn, pop, water, and pass out Shinerama helium balloons to kids. We also get our Student Union’s mascot (SU the Fox) to walk around at various points during the day passing out Shinerama stickers and tattoos to kids. They love it!

We started this event four years ago with just a little table where we didn’t raise that much money. Every year since, we’ve been able to buy pieces of equipment that help us grow in our professionalism, which makes parents more apt to buy from us. We have now acquired a really nice table and set of chairs, a 10’x10’ canopy to shelter us from sun and rain and our own Shinerama banner to hang up!

We’ve also been very lucky to find someone in the city to lend us their own popcorn and cotton candy machines, as well as all of the popcorn salt, oil and sugar flavouring. As well, all of the pop and water we sell is donated from our Student Union’s Pepsi Promotions Fund. It is in our school’s exclusive Pepsi contract that they donate $16,000 to be used as they see fit. This year they donated $200 to our Shinerama campaign, which we used to buy 18 cases of pop and 18 cases of water. We sold the pop and water for a $1 apiece, leaving us only to buy sugar and popcorn kernels! The reason that we’ve had such success with this fundraiser is because profit margins are ridiculous! A 2Kg bag of sugar costs $2.50, which makes approximately 50 bags of cotton candy (medium size freezer bags that are not zip-locked), which is then sold for $2 apiece!

Our event was not without its hiccups of course! We spent the first hour without HYDRO! Thankfully, five people from our team met the previous night and made enough cotton candy to fill five Rubbermaid totes, which we were able to sell in the hour. This year, we were also able to make an agreement with the city to be the only cotton candy vendor at the event.

In the eight hours that we were open (11am-7pm) we had a seven hour line up that did not stop and a 30 minute wait for our cotton candy which lasted ALL DAY LONG! This allowed us to almost double our Canada Day fundraiser from $700 last year, to $1275.59 this year!

Mount Allison University Update

Here’s an update from Mount Allison University all the way from Beautiful Sackville New Brunswick!

We’ve held a few events so far to try to reach our goal of $20,000! First we had our “Shinerama Summer Semi” at the Pub. Despite the torrential downpour we still had a great turnout and raised about $600 for Shinerama! Our second Pub Night, the “Shinerama Beach Bash” raised us $800!

We also had a Canada BBQ that helped us push our total to $2,739.37 so far!

We have a few other events already planned, such as a Bottle Drive on July 10th, Tequila Wave on July 10th and a Garden Party/Silent Auction on July 29th! It’s shaping up to be an exciting summer!

I hope everyone’s enjoying the summer! Good Luck with your campaigns!

Happy Canada Day - Eh!

Hey Shiner Nation!

Happy Canada Day! Canada Day is definitely one of my favourite holidays, it has it all: fireworks, partying, patriotism, a day off work, and, most importantly, dunk tanks. I really think the world would be a much better place if there was a dunk tank on every corner. A word of advice, however: be careful when you light off fireworks, especially if you’ve had a few “beverages”. Last year a few of us Shinerama folks celebrated Canada Day in a little town... er, dwelling, called Meat Cove (seriously) and some people in the group thought it would be a great idea to light off fireworks to celebrate, despite us not having a place to secure them into the ground. Fortunately the most sober of the bunch thought that “it’s ok, I can hold them,” was not a good enough solution, so we waited until were sobered up!

Canada Day’s a great time for some quick fundraisers, too. If you’ve already planned something, great! If not, what’s to stop you from going to a beach and selling freezies? Or asking people who are having celebrations to donate their recyclables? Even if you just grabbed some Shinerama shirts, some suckers, stickers, and head downtown to some events, you might end up with a few bucks!

If you end up doing any fundraising for Shinerama on Canada Day, we’d love to see it! Take some pictures, or better yet, record a few videos and post them! We’d love to see what you’re up to, and whoever submits the best video (as chosen by me) will receive a sweet prize. Is it cash? Is it something really awesome? No. It will most likely be a high-five from me, possibly a t-shirt with me giving you thumbs up on it. Definitely worth it.

Hope everyone has a great Canada Day!

Update from NAIT - 25% of goal already reached!

Bonjour to all the Shinerama lovers!

Here is an update on the 2010 NAIT Shinerama campaign so far:

In the last few weeks I have sent out all of our NAIT Student Association VIP card sponsorship packages. I have been attending meetings and cashing cheques from all the major bars in Edmonton! Thus far I have raised $5,300!! Pretty exciting and I am not even done getting sponsors AND haven’t even started selling the cards! We also are hosting a Shinerama Climb for Shine Night on July 18th where people come out and rock climb for a night; this is projected to raise $500. Then on August 7th we are hosting the first annual Shinerama Fun Run; which is projected to make $2000!!

As the summer continues, I am getting very excited about the campaign. Once we start selling the VIP cards to students, the big money will start to roll in! I hope to meet my goal of $20,000 and am excited to see what the year brings! I’m 25% there already and there is no slowing down in sight!
I hope everyone is having a fantastic summer and enjoying your campaign! Shinerama love! Also I have taken up twitter; it’s a confusing relationship!

University of Manitoba - Buck-A-Suck Success!

Hello Shinerama Nation!
All the way from the University of Manitoba this is an update on our Buck-A-Suck nights.

Team U of M has been super hard at work for the last three months trying to make strategical improvements to our campaigns from prior years. In the past, we’ve only attended one bar in the same night to sell suckers. This year we have learned quickly that we capitalise best when we break into teams and arrange to have groups at two or three bars per night. At one of our recent Buck-A-Suck nights, we attended two bars and broke the all time record by raising $800! If that wasn't enough, we beat that milestone during our last Buck-A-Suck where we attended three bars and fundraised over $1,230!!

As we continue to do more events throughout the summer, Eric and I have noticed the sheer potential that someone with a sales background can bring to the team. Therefore, a new Sales Coordinator position was opened on our committee! We were very lucky to find an individual who has great sales experience and at his first Buck-A-Suck night, he fundraised $330 by himself in less than two hours. No one before that had ever raised more than $175 in a single night!

Our other volunteers have also been amazing - at the end of the night they had a single donation of over $100 for the remainder of their bucket of suckers (Bryan in the blue shirt is the highest donor for the year donating $120). Trying to get donations at the end of the night from groups or individuals for the remainder of suckers has proven to be a great strategy.

Our team has an amazing Shinerama spirit and drive - we keep on surpassing goals and enjoying the journey. Below I have attached some pictures of our Buck-A-Suck nights.

Hope you all are having a fantastic time with your campaigns, best of luck teams!

CBU Students' Union 10th Annual Shinerama Softball Tournament

The CBU Students’ Union is holding it’s 10th Annual Shinerama Softball tournament on September 11, 2010 and it’s always a great success!

Registration is in teams of 15 with a maximum of ten teams (if you want to get the tournament done in one day). Each player pays $20 to participate in the event and their registration includes a Shinerama softball t-shirt! The teams all get the same designed shirt, but each team gets to pick a colour for their shirt. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis.

You can book a field in your local community and then borrow the equipment from a sporting store or recreation centre.

The rules are VERY simple. Here’s how our tourney works!

1. One new ball must be brought to the field by each team. It should be a softball suitable for lob ball play. Bats and gloves are the responsibility of the team.
2. Each team will be guaranteed two games during the tournament.
3. No touching home plate.
4. No sliding.
5. Each game will consist of six innings or one hour, whichever comes first.
6. There is a five run limit per inning except for the final inning where there is a no runs limit.
7. Batting order must be posted prior to game start and every third person up to bat must be a female.
8. Foul balls hit with two strikes count as a third strike.
9. There must be four women on the field at all times.
10. In the event of inclement weather, the tournament will be re-scheduled.
11. All teams are required to field a full team (with a minimum of four women) at their specified game time at their specified field or else risk forfeiting their game to the opposing team.
12. Standings within each division are ranked by head-to-head matchups, then +/-.
13. One home run per team per inning. Additional home runs are outs.
14. This is for charity so play safe and have fun!

Really, that’s it, that’s all! It’s a relatively simple event to plan with really great results. At CBU, we LOVE having the softball tourney every year and the students love it too!

MSVU Students Shine Tall Ship Silva

It was a cold and cloudy day in Halifax on Tuesday, June 1st, but it did not break their spirit! A group of students from Mount Saint Vincent University shined Tall Ship Silva to kick off their 2010 Shinerama campaign. Now shined from bow to stern, the Tall Ship Silva is ready for its summer adventures and so is the MSVU Students’ Union with a jam-packed summer of Shinerama events.

Staff from the MSVU Public Affairs gave out hot chocolate to all the Shiners and Z103.5 radio was on sight to help shine Silva. MLA, Diana Whalen, MSVU Interim President, Alexa McDonough, CCFF Development Coordinator, Pamela Barnes and CCFF President NS Chapter, Colin Fox were also there to help kick-off their 2010 campaign. As they gave Silva a good cleaning, some buzz was floating around downtown Halifax as people walking by asked questions and donated money. Halifax Metro News also posted a picture in their paper the following day.

Don't Stop Believing - 2010 Shinerama National Leadership Conference

Welcome Message from the Shinerama Chair, Serena Hartl

Greetings Future Shiners and Shiners of Shinerama’s Past,

My name is Serena Hartl, the current Captain Shinerama in residence and it is my pleasure to be with you on our journey through Shinerama 2010.

Many of you are probably asking yourselves what is Shinerama? Shinerama is many things, it’s a fundraiser, it’s an awareness campaign, it’s a Orientation Week activity, it’s a mind blowing, heart string pulling experience and it’s something like you have never experienced before.

This year as your National Chair I round out a decade with this amazing charity, Shinerama has helped me to become the person I am today, and the friendships I have acquired will last all my life. I have an amazing team of Regional Directors and Campaign Advisors who are as determined as I am to help you have the greatest Shinerama experience possible. We all come from different backgrounds, have had different experiences and literally are from one coast to the other. I have a feeling that this year is going to be the greatest year ever!

So what are we fighting for? We are students fighting cystic fibrosis (CF). CF is an evil disease that effects the respiratory and digestive systems of people the same age as you and I. You will learn all about the disease at the conference so I will not get into that now.

This year at the conference we will gather from over 65 post secondary institutions across Canada, representing more than 34,000 volunteers and 10 provinces. I promise you this will be an experience you will never forget and the most memorable May long weekend of your life. Now that is a pretty big promise, but don’t you worry I will follow through.

I will conclude my short welcome with my definition of Shinerama, I hope by the end of the weekend in London you will have your own definition and share it with me. You are all amazing individuals for taking on this task and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Read the rest of this Sun Times to learn more about what to expect from the conference and what to bring. See you soon!

Trying to define Shinerama is like trying to explain Love – it’s nearly impossible unless you’ve been in it. And even when you’ve been in it, it’s different for everyone. Not even an experienced Shiner can truly grasp or explain Shinerama to its truest and deepest meaning. Its concepts are a never-ending story of an open book of experiences. Shinerama lives in one's heart, where memories are but shadows lingering in your soul. Shinerama is a living spirit it brings young people together to save young people. It becomes a part of who you are and as you grow – it grows too.

Always shining,

Serena Hartl

Shinerama Chair
