Leading by Lollipops

With life, work and play sometimes it is difficult to stay motivated with the planning of Shinerama campaigns. This little video from our friend, Drew Dudley who wants us all to know that we are leaders, someone is watching and you are making a difference.

For those new to Shinerama, Drew has been involved with Shinerama for nearly 15 years in several roles such as Campaign Director, Mount Allison University, Campaign Advisor, Regional Director and National Chair.

Nowadays, Drew is spending his time sharing his wisdom with small & big groups around the world. Most recently at the Regional Shinerama Conference for Ontario & Quebec and our pals at Wilfrid Laurier University volunteers to get ready for O-week.

Shinerama Regional Meetings 2011

Hello Shiner-Nation!

I just thought I would take a minute or two and blog about the upcoming Regional Conferences.

Firstly I wanted to say that I'm very much looking forward to seeing everyone at the Ont/Que, Sas/Man, and Atlantic Regional conferences. I'm sure they will all be a blast! BC/Alb I really wish I could make it out there and share some Shine-Love... maybe next year. Have fun!

So why do we have Regionals?

The reason that we host these mini-conferences (some of them not so mini) is to try and provide you all with the tools and support to help you all run successful campaigns. What we find is that the National Shinerama Conference is where we can educate all the campaign directors on what cystic fibrosis is, what Cystic Fibrosis Canada does, what Shinerama is, what things you should concentrate on...you know all that fun stuff. During the Regional Conference we get a chance to catch up on where your campaign is at the midway point, hear some successes and not so successes from May-July, introduce your school's committee members to Shinerama, and most of all get everyone focused and energized for the rest of the summer straight through the end of the campaign.

What will be covered at the Regionals?

The Regional Directors have been working hard to get your feedback and getting the input from our Campaign Advisors to come up with agendas that will more or less rock your worlds. Expect guest speakers from the CF community to come in and share their stories with you. We'll be going over our Shinerama.ca results so far and setting expectations going forward. We'll be doing teach-outs to everyone about our Text Giving. Probably most importantly though there will be lots of opportunities for everyone to share their experiences so far and for everyone to learn from each other's campaigns.

What if I can't make it to my Regional?

Have no fear - we will not leave you hanging. After each Regional the Regional Director will send out a summary of what went on to everyone over our listserve! That way if you couldn't make it to yours you'll still know what went on! Sound good?

Hope all is well and remember that I'm always a quick call, email, or tweet away!

2011 Welcome Message - Ryan McDermott, Shinerama Chair

Hello blog-readers, I make this my first blog post as your National Chairperson.

I have never blogged before. So please be gentle on me bloggers. I guess a proper first blog might be a quick intro to who I am and what I hope to accomplish during the next couple of years with Shinerama.

Who am I? - well firstly 'Who am I?' is a great flick starring Jackie Chan that my grandmother gave me years and years ago. Features a truly butt-kicking scene where Jackie Chan is fighting with clogs on. Awesome stuff - I highly recommend!

Well a few things about me - I'm from Cornwall, PEI but I currently live in Winterpeg. I am a fan of many things in life - Aerosmith, the Montreal Canadiens, Albert Pujols, big tvs, Baconators, Pez, and dogs.

My turn offs include onions, public buses, garlic, cats, and anyone who might smell like any of those things.

I've been involved with Shinerama since 2002 and have been coming to the National Shinerama Conference since 2004. I consider myself pretty fortunate to be involved with all this and I really cherish all the memories and friendships that I've made.

So coming into 2011 & 2012 I'm really hoping to increase the sense of responsibility in everyone who is involved on every level. I hope to be a hands-on chair and I make myself available as much as possible through all the avenues available (phone, email, facebook, twitter, smoke signals, song). Already we have changed our Regional Directors' responsibilities and have increased the duties to each and every single National Campaign Advisor.

I think that compared to years past where Shinerama was seen as something fun to do and something that people will try to fit in as much as they can, this year is the beginning of our National team seeing Shinerama as a job - with real duties, real evaluations, real expectations, and taking a real time commitment.

I guess that's about it folks for my first blog. I will be trying to blog frequently to ensure that our blog is a place for everyone to congregate.

So take care for now and the next time I post something I'll certainly try and be a little more entertaining!
